The main goal of the EU-funded project „RM@Schools-ESEE” is to promote and assist a wide dissemination action on raw materials-related themes in schools and to society with special attention to the east and south-eastern European region, by setting up and/or expanding a wider collaborative networking between European and local actors, and strategic partnerships between different actors of Raw Materials sectors, including industry. The core process of this project is to make research and industry meet schools, which in turn, need to meet society, in a common learning environment.
Ildiko and her team are developing two new toolkits on the topic of Sustainable Concrete: „My Concrete Box“ and „My Digital Concrete Mixing Lab“.
The aim of the toolkit „My Concrete Box“ is to outline the difference between virgin and secondary raw materials and natural raw materials, which are applied in the field of construction (building materials). The users of the toolkits will learn about the importance of recycling and reusing raw materials, how to combine various kinds of raw materials in a recipe and how to make sustainable concrete. They will learn about safety at work. They will follow a step-by-step guide on how to make the concrete mixture and will learn about the curing process of concrete. Each step from the experimental part is described visually and in words in the toolkit. All materials and objects in the suitcase are labelled. The toolkit contains all safety measures and necessary safety equipment.
The aim of the toolkit „My Digital Concrete Mixing Lab“ is to teach pupils how to make sustainable concrete mixtures and how to work safely in laboratory conditions with building materials through gamification. For this purpose, a desktop-game is being developed with the help of students for TU Wien. The raw draft version of the game can be seen in the picture below. The game will teach pupils how to differentiate between „good“ and „bad“ mixtures through a newly created visual standard built upon the physical characteristics of concrete.
